ignite hope in many families struggling to put food on the table
Did you know? Tzu Chi had received 4,381 applications for its “Kita1Keluarga” relief programme. In order to expedite the assessments and subsequent delivery of aid to the needy families, Tzu Chi KL & Selangor had, within two weeks, mobilized over 10,000 volunteer participations to visit each of the 4,000-plus families at their homes to further understand their needs. If it takes two hours to complete the interview of a single applicant, then the volunteers had contributed 21,538 hours of their time. And all these hours translated to over RM125,000 in value contributions, assuming an hourly rate of RM5.77. Moreover, the volunteers personally bore all expenses incurred for the home visits.
With a commitment to honour the public’s trust, the volunteers will carefully assess each case post home visit, and begin distributing hand-outs for a period of three months, commencing end of August 2020. Giving is not the privilege of the rich, but the sincere. To amass the kindness from everyone for the "Kita1Keluarga" relief programme, Tzu Chi had held various sessions for the volunteers and public members to donate savings in their bamboo banks, and organized charity sales of vegetarian food in various communities since July 2020.
Each donation makes a difference. Each Ringgit, when pooled together, can help those families in dire need to survive this crisis.
Following the launch of the “Kita1Keluarga” relief programme, Tzu Chi KL & Selangor volunteers walked into the community to further understand the applicants’ needs.
With over 4,000 applications received, Tzu Chi volunteers insisted on visiting each of the eligible applicant personally, to extend their care and evaluate the applicants’ conditions.
68-year-old Yap Kim Lin lost her job during the pandemic, leaving her unable to pay the rent and was forced to move out of the house. Learning of her predicament, Tzu Chi volunteers helped her to settle down in a new place.
This Covid-19 pandemic is like a “grand lesson” for all of us. Let’s all awaken to the message it is bringing us and use this opportunity to reflect on ourselves and aspire towards the good. Let’s head in the direction for the common good of the world and work together with love to dispel and mitigate all disasters. – Dharma Master Cheng Yen
